There are many examples (two that I highlight below) of the outstanding work by staff, board, interns, and volunteers that is made possible through generous donations to OHC’s Annual Fund campaign. At the core of this work is the ongoing collection and preservation of objects, photos, and diverse stories documenting the history of Oberlin.
I ask you to please join me in contributing to the Annual Fund of the Oberlin Heritage Center. Check out just some of the photos taken this year that capture special moments from recent months highlighting our impact in the community.
There are many stories in Oberlin’s history that resonate with us, but I think few more than the story of Oberlin resident John Price and his liberation from slave catchers. This past April, John’s story was told in the documentary premiere of “A Higher Law: The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858” at Oberlin’s Apollo Theatre. The Oberlin Heritage Center helped to facilitate and Executive Director Liz Schultz, along with other Oberlinians, was featured in the film. Being able to tell John’s history is a testament to the support donors like you provide with your gift to OHC’s Annual Fund campaign to further the mission to preserve and share Oberlin’s unique heritage and to make our community a better place to live, learn, work, and visit.
As Oberlin College Archivist, I have collaborated on many projects with the Oberlin Heritage Center staff. I am always impressed with the dedication they put into every program, tour, summer camp, and classroom visit. For several summers we have co-hosted tours for teachers from California so they can learn about the history of Oberlin’s anti-slavery activity. Each visit included an informative and well-received bus tour plus games and toys at the Little Red Schoolhouse. We already look forward to welcoming them back next summer!
