Oberlin Heritage Center's Hands-On History Camps
Summer 2023 will feature two themed camps offered over two weeks!
Architecture Camp
August 7-11 (Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Children will love learning the basics of architecture in this hands-on camp. Campers will tour Oberlin architecture, explore building materials, try construction challenges, sketch designs, create mini structures, and envision buildings of the future. Scouts attending this camp will also complete some requirements for Architecture badges.
For ages 9-13
Astronomy & Antiquity Camp
August 14-18 (Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
How did ancient societies and civilizations use the stars to make calendars, navigate the high seas, and tell stories? Campers will have an opportunity to visit the Oberlin College Observatory, hear guest speakers, and learn mythological stories about our constellations in this brand-new summer camp. Try making your own mini earthworks, learn to identify planetary movements and help map the stars as you create calendars, compasses, and sundials this summer.
For ages 10-15
Notes about Camps and Registration:
Camps are designed to stimulate youth creativity and allow them to experience history, architecture, art, crafts, and games of diverse cultures. An experienced educator leads each camp, assisted by college student interns as well as youth and community volunteers. Each session takes place at the air-conditioned Oberlin Depot (240 South Main St.) with occasional walking field trips to notable locations nearby. Children should bring a bag lunch, beverage, and appropriate outdoor wear each day. An afternoon snack will be provided by OHC.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations must be accompanied by payment. Children and grandchildren of Oberlin Heritage Center members may receive the member discount. No refunds will be made for cancellations within one week prior to the session the registrant is scheduled to attend. A camp session may be cancelled by OHC if a minimum enrollment is not met by one week prior to the start date and a full refund will be made at that time. Scholarships may be available to those who qualify for schools' free lunch programs (please inquire 440-774-1700).
