Youth Summer Camps

Oberlin Heritage Center's Hands-On History Camps

Summer 2020 will feature two week-long themed camps!

***Updated 6/11/2020***

Architecture Camp (Virtual & Hybrid In-Person Camp)

July 6 - 10 (Monday – Friday)

Designed for children ages 8-13. $45 for members; $50 for nonmembers ($5 discount if registered before June 15)

Children will love learning the basics of architecture in this hands-on camp brought into their own home. Campers will tour Oberlin architecture (virtually and hopefully in-person), explore building materials, try construction challenges, sketch designs, create mini structures, and envision buildings of the future. Scouts attending this camp will also complete some requirements for Architecture badges. The Oberlin Heritage Center will organize an in-person walking tour of Oberlin Architecture and a lunch outing during a three-hour period on Friday, July 10 from 9:00am-12:00pm (weather permitting). Children must bring appropriate outdoor attire for walking, a mask, water bottle, and lunch.

Please note that due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the structure of this camp has changed from a primarily in-person camp to a mostly virtual one. We will provide pre-assembled material and activity packages for families to pick up in advance of the camp. Activities and lessons will be administered through live online platforms and pre-recorded videos. Children will need access to a computer, tablet, or smart phone for approximately 1-2 hours each day.

Folk Camp: Arts, Trades, and Crafts (Virtual & In-Person Hybrid Camp)

August 3 - 7 (Monday – Friday)

$45 for members; $50 for nonmembers ($5 discount if registered before June 15)

Ideas of what makes something an art, trade, or craft have changed over time and continue to with new technologies. Campers will uncover forms of human creation through exploring historic tradespeople,  people who still work in traditional ways or have discovered new ways, and participating in hands-on activities. Folkways that will be explored include basketry, carpentry, cooking, fiber arts, ceramics, and more!

The Folk Camp will offer in-person hours Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 9:00am-12:00pm on the Oberlin Heritage Center grounds (73 ½ S. Professor Street). In-person camp days will take place primarily outdoors and there may be occasional walking field trips to locations around town. Children must bring appropriate outdoor attire, sturdy shoes, and a mask each day. A bag lunch and water bottle must also accompany the children every day they come to the museum.

CANCELLED - Explore Oberlin

August 10 - 14 (Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

Staff Only! Keep Out! Do you ever wonder what's behind that door? In this camp, we’ll explore behind-the-scenes of museums, businesses, and landmarks in Oberlin to learn more about what makes the town run. Our week-long expedition focuses on the realms of education, art, history, entertainment, and city services.

Notes about Camps and Registration:

Camps are designed to stimulate children’s creativity and allow them to experience history, architecture, art, crafts, and games of diverse cultures. An experienced educator leads each camp, assisted by college student interns as well as youth and community volunteers. Each session takes place at the air-conditioned Oberlin Depot (240 South Main St.) with occasional walking field trips to notable locations nearby. Children should bring a bag lunch, water bottle, closed-toed shoes and appropriate outdoor wear each day. An afternoon snack will be provided by OHC.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations must be accompanied by payment. Children and grandchildren of Oberlin Heritage Center members may receive the member discount. No refunds will be made for cancellations within one week prior to the session the registrant is scheduled to attend. A camp session may be cancelled by OHC if a minimum enrollment is not met by one week prior to the start date and a full refund will be made at that time. Scholarships may be available to those who qualify for schools' free lunch programs (please inquire 440-774-1700).

Register online or fill out the Registration Flyer below and mail to P.O. Box 0455, Oberlin, OH, 44074.

If you register online, you will be contacted and asked to complete a permission form. Please note that "Folk Camp" and "Explore Oberlin" camps may require additional waivers for special activities.
