March 25 & 26 - Pony Express and Printing Press
Hold the phone! Stop the presses! Find out the different ways people sent messages to each other in the past. By the end of camp you'll know how to print a newspaper, send a message on a telegraph, write your name in cursive, type on a typewriter, and record your voice. Part of camp will include a hands-on visit to the letter press studio of Special Collections at the Oberlin College library. Register Online.
March 27 & 28 - Gods and Glory: Ancient Greece
Do you have what it takes to become a Greek Legend? Enter the Olympic challenge, make a petrifying Medusa mask, examine objects of Greece, and go on an odyssey of tales of gods and glory. Together we'll explore this mighty civilization of the ancient world, from food to fashion, armor to architecture. Register Online.
Oberlin Heritage Center camps are open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13. Each two-day camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Camps are designed to stimulate children's creativity and whet their appetites for history, architecture, art, and the tastes and sounds of other cultures and other times. Camp will be held at the Oberlin Depot at 240 South Main Street, sometimes with walking field trips to interesting places nearby, weather permitting. For all days children should bring a bag lunch and dress for being outside for certain activities. Simple snacks are provided.
Meet our teachers! Liz Schultz is the Museum Education and Tour Coordinator for the Oberlin Heritage Center. She graduated with degrees in archaeology and anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Binghamton University (NY). Liz then earned a M.A. in museum studies with a focus in museum education from the Cooperstown Graduate Program (New York). Liz enjoys inspiring curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for diverse cultures, past and present. Richard Donegan is an AmeriCorps member working in Northeast Ohio to support local history organizations. Camps are assisted by an adult intern or volunteer, and young volunteers from the community.
Fee:
Non-members: $45 per two-day camp per child. Members: $40 per camp per child.
Register by March 9, 2013 and receive a $3 per camp discount. Partial scholarships may be available to those who qualify for schools' free lunch programs.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. No refunds will be made within one week prior to the session the registrant is scheduled to attend. Maximum enrollment is 17 children per camp. Camps may be cancelled if a minimum enrollment (8) is not met by one week prior to the start date.
