Sept 20 - Discovering Dave

September 20 (Tuesday, 7:00 p.m.)

Presenter: George Wingard, Program Coordinator, University of South Carolina Institute of Anthropology and Archaeology

OHC is very pleased to welcome archaeologist George Wingard who co-produced a 2013 documentary about Dave, an enslaved potter who acquired the rare skills of reading and writing. Dave's pots, sometimes signed and marked with original poetry, are famous. Wingard will spend time sharing Dave's story with Oberlin school children in the morning.  In the evening, the community  is invited to view a special showing of the 49-minute film Discovering Dave – Spirit Captured in Clay, followed by a brief question-and-answer period, and the opportunity to examine one of Dave's very own pots.  This free, public program is co-sponsored by the Oberlin College History Department.

Location:  Oberlin College Hallock Auditorium in the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies (122 Elm Street).  Parking is available in nearby lots on either side of West College Street.
