2011 Children's Summer Camps
This summer, the Oberlin Heritage Center is offering a variety of camps for boys and girls ages 8 to 17. The programs are designed to stimulate children's creativity and to whet their appetites for history, architecture, art, crafts, games, and the tastes and sounds of other cultures and other times.
Camps are led by an experienced teacher assisted by college student interns and youth and community volunteers. Except for the Junior Docent camp, classes are held at the air-conditioned Oberlin Depot at 240 South Main Street, with some walking field trips to interesting places nearby. For all sessions, children should bring a bag lunch. Simple snacks are provided. Please see the registration details for scholarship opportunities.
Junior Docent Camp June 20-21 (Mon & Tues, 9:30am to 3pm)
This camp introduces young people (ages 13 to 17) who are interested in community service and
leadership to the behind-the-scenes workings of a small history museum. Teens learn techniques of greeting visitors, giving tours, teaching historic games, and much more! Following completion of the fun two-day camp, participants can assist with various tours, special events and programs as their schedules permit. The fee is $50 ($45 for children and grandchildren of OHC members) with a $25 reimbursement for students who complete at least 15 hours of service for OHC by the end of 2011. What a great way to develop new skills, build your resume, meet other students who love history, and complete community service hours! Instructor Liz Schultz is eager to share with young students the behind-the-scenes fun of being a museum docent. We look forward to seeing you here!

Soldiers and Civilians: Civil War Era Camp for Kids. July 25-29 (Mon-Fri, 9:30am to 4:00pm)

Do you want to learn more about the Civil War and have a blast while doing it? Journey with us through time as we travel from the Civil War homefront to the battlefront and everything in between- and all before dinner! Discover things you never knew about the blues and grays. Twitter? Imagine waiting at home and getting news about your family weeks after a battle. Think you could handle camp life? If you think school cafeteria food is gross, wait until you see what these soldiers had to eat! Hear about war times through memories of people who lived it, and then create your own story to share. Find out what life would have been like for kids at that time - games, music, and new inventions. You will be learning about one of biggest events in American history 150 years after it started! (Ages 8-13).
Kids and World Cultures August 8-12 (Mon-Fri, 9:30am to 4:00pm)
Hola! Ni Hao! Merhaba! This is how kids from all over the world say "Hello!" Join us for the excitement as we hop from country to country and continent to continent and explore all the fascinating and diverse cultures and peoples that we encounter along the way. This is one globetrotting mission that you definitely won't want to miss out on! Sample the tastes and join in making the sounds and music of many exciting cultures from around the world! (Ages 8-13)
Architecture Camp August 15-19 (Mon-Fri, 9:30am to 4:00pm)

The Three Little Pigs taught us never to build houses of straw and sticks, but why are straw and sticks a bad idea? Ever wonder why buildings look the way they do? What keeps tall buildings standing? Join us for an exciting and fast-paced introduction to architecture by visiting local structures in Oberlin and talking with a real-life architect. You'll even get a chance to construct some models and test a creation against the forces of nature! Come build your knowledge with us this summer! Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts attending this camp will also complete some requirements for Architecture badges and Interest Projects. (Ages 8-13)
Meet our talented instructors! Liz Schultz is the Museum Education and Tour Coordinator of the
Oberlin Heritage Center. She graduated with degrees in archaeology and anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Binghamton University (NY). Liz then earned a M.A. in museum studies with a focus in museum education from the Cooperstown Graduate Program (NewYork). Liz enjoys inspiring curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for diverse cultures, past and present. Maria Surovy is a middle school social studies teacher at The Ratner School in Pepper Pike. She has taught Oberlin Heritage Center summer camps for several years. Mrs. Surovy is a graduate of the University of Dayton with a degree in secondary education in history and political science and has a M.S. degree in Historic Preservation from Ball State (Indiana). She taught for one year in Saipan in the Northern Marianas Islands and has traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe. She attended a 2005 Gilder Lehrman Institute at Cambridge University on the Cold War. Assisting Liz and Maria is Karyn Norwood, a recent graduate from St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT, with a major in History and minors in English and Medieval Studies. She is currently an AmeriCorps volunteer in the Ohio History Service Program focusing on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes may be cancelled if a minimum enrollment is not met by one week prior to the start date. No refunds will be made within one week prior to the session the registrant is scheduled to attend. Partial scholarships may be available to those who qualify for schools' free lunch programs (please inquire). Reservations must be accompanied by payment. Grandchildren of Oberlin Heritage Center members may receive the member discount as well.
