Oct 18 - The Korean War: How it Changed Our World

October 18 (Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.)

Presenter: Jiyul Kim, Colonel (retired), U.S. Army & Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Oberlin College

In this illustrated presentation Jiyul Kim discusses the Korean War and its long-term impact on today’s world and likely into the future. From the war’s origins in the rise of competing visions of Korean nationalism in the wake of World War I, to Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonialism by the U.S. and the USSR at the end of World War II, to the “war without end” that fundamentally affected the course of the Cold War, this talk will consider the role of the Korean War in creating today’s geostrategic landscape and the unprecedented centrality of American power. This is also the story of how a war overturned an enduring principle of the American republic that had rejected military power as the foundation of its purpose and values.  Location: Oberlin Public Library, Community Room.
