March-2016: OHC Celebrates Women's History Month

The Oberlin Heritage Center is offering a number of events – many of them free – throughout the month of March in recognition of Women’s History Month.

Saturday, March 12 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the Heritage Center waives admission fees ($6/adult) for the Upstairs/Downstairs tour as part of a free Smithsonian Museum Day event in honor of Women’s History Month.  In addition to free admission, the 75-minute guided tour highlights the ladies of Oberlin.  Advance registration is appreciated but not required.

Thursday, March 17 at 7:15 p.m., Executive Director Liz Schultz presents “One Step More,” a women’s history narrative originally developed by the Heritage Center as a guided walking tour featuring Oberlin women’s stories and landmarks from both campus and community.  This “indoor version” is rich in historic images and tales of Oberlin’s early years of co-education and its critics, female faculty and administrators,  black feminism,  women giving public presentations (heaven forbid!), a bit of scandal, and women leading social and public health movements.  The illustrated program is free and open to the public; no reservations needed.  Sponsored by Kendal at Oberlin’s Third Thursday lecture series, this event takes place in Heiser Auditorium (600 Kendal Drive).

Saturday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m., the Heritage Center offers “One Step More”: Oberlin Women’s History Walk in the format of a 75-minute guided walking tour focusing on local women’s continual efforts to gain rights and respect.   In 1834, “founding father” John J. Shipherd pledged Oberlin’s commitment to the elevation of the female character through education.  Little did he know there was dynamite in that promise and women carried the matches!  Participants will enjoy hearing stories of powerful Oberlin women who used Shipherd’s promise to shape what it meant to be a woman in Oberlin and in the U.S.  $6 per adult; free to OHC members, any college student and children under 18.  Advance reservations are required.

To make an online reservation for any of the Heritage Center’s Women’s History Month events, visit www.oberlinheritagecenter.org.  Reservations also may be made by phone at (440) 774-1700.
